The Extraordinary Microclimate of Arcaverde

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Sellaro at the foot of the Pollino massif, Arcaverde’s olive groves occupy a unique position: a dramatic natural amphitheatre where limestone peaks descend toward the Ionian Sea.

This proximity between mountain and sea creates a distinct microclimate. During summer, warm maritime breezes sweep inland, tempering the heat and protecting the trees. At night, cool air cascades down from the peaks of the Pollino, creating a significant day-to-night temperature shift.

The impact of the land on our extra virgin olive oil:

High Polyphenol Synthesis:

The dramatic day-to-night temperature shift stimulates the olives to synthesise high concentrations of polyphenols and natural antioxidants, granting the oil its signature vitality and stability.

Natural Pest Protection:

Constant atmospheric ventilation from the sea combined with cooler mountain air lowers humidity levels, naturally suppressing pests such as the olive fruit fly without the need for harsh chemical interventions.

Aromatic Intensity:

A slower, balanced ripening process allows our olives to develop complex, vibrant organoleptic profiles. Local plants and herbs also play an important role enriching our oil bouquet with their fragrances.

The Golden Thread of Time

Millennia of Olive Culture in the Piana di Sibari

Long before Arcaverde tended its groves, the fertile expanse of the Piana di Sibari was celebrated across the Mediterranean for its agricultural wealth.

Olive cultivation here dates back to the 8th century BC, when Achaean settlers founded the ancient city of Sybaris. The Sybarites transformed the coastal plain and surrounding foothills into a flourishing agricultural sanctuary. Archaeological excavations have revealed terracotta oil amphorae, carbonised olive stones, and ancient stone presses, proving that olive oil was produced and traded on these very hills over 2,700 years ago.

Since then, the olive-growing tradition remained unbroken. Arcaverde continues this ancient lineage, cultivating native varieties that have adapted to this specific land across millennia.

Cerchiara di Calabria

A Mountain Village of Stone and Tradition

Perched against the sheer limestone cliffs of Mount Sellaro, Cerchiara di Calabria overlooks the plain and sea below. Recognised as a historic Città dell’Olio (City of Olive Oil), this mountain village is a true repository of Calabrian agrarian tradition.

Cerchiara’s history is woven into its dramatic landscape. High above the village sits the ruin of the old castle, from which medieval stone lanes wind down. A deep ravine surrounds the village, providing in ancient times a natural defence against potential attacks from the sea, which were very frequent in the area.

The village is equally famous for Pane di Cerchiara, an iconic round bread crafted with ancient wheat and mother yeast, then baked in centuries-old wood-fired stone ovens. Originally made by mountain farmers to last weeks in the fields, it remains the traditional companion for tasting newly pressed extra virgin olive oil.

The Sanctuary of Biodiversity

The Pollino National Park

Arcaverde’s groves border the Pollino National Park, Italy’s largest protected wilderness and an officially designated UNESCO Global Geopark. Spanning dramatic gorges, and ancient forests, the park acts as a protective ecological shield around our land.

This untouched environment provides pure air and vibrant soil, creating a natural buffer zone for our groves. Spanning both Mediterranean and mountain climate zones, the park shelters rare botanical species like the Pino Loricato (symbol of the Pollino), the Pollino Peony, wild mountain orchids, and dense carpets of wild oregano, thyme, and mint.

The pristine ecosystem of the Pollino infuses everything around Arcaverde, surrounding our groves in an unblemished habitat where agriculture exists in complete harmony with the wild.
